The MSNBC/Newsvine poll at http://tinyurl.com/6o58db has Barack Obama leading by a wide margin (approximately three quarters of all respondents). This poll allows users to comment on why they chose as they did. Some of the McCain sentiments are as follows. I wanted to respond to each of them individually, but instead, I will address some of the concepts from these posts at the end. Enjoy the selection of quotes:
"There is too much we don't know about Obama--he is so vague that I cannot vote for him. What I do know is not comforting."
"McCain-Palin is the only RATIONAL choice for Americans who want to KEEP their freedoms AND their money as we rebuild. B.O. is a MARXIST! "
"We need someone who will respect our flag and our country.May God help us."
"Let's keep CAPITALISM alive, this is what built this country. Socialism does not work. Hard work does."
"The last thing we need is the Dems to take control. Take from the middle class and give to welfare & immigrants? No Way. I work for my $!"
"I'm afraid of the information that will finally come out about Obama in the 13th hour...."
"Our Soldiers and their families have sacrificed too much for us to let our country go to hell! Vote for freedom today! Vote for McCain!"
"God help us if McCain looses!!"
"THINK ABOUT WHAT THESE TWO MEN HAVE DONE FOR YOUR COUNTRY. . WAIT A MIN. OBOZO HAS NOT DONE ANYTHING."
"Obama cannot unify a country that he says clings to religion and guns. People who put their hopes in Obama will look back in disappointment"
"Because character matters. Our enemies are rooting for Obama. What do you think this means?"
"Anyone who thinks McCain is 4 more years of Bush, hasn't done their homework. What we don't know about Obama is frightening"
"John McCain will govern for all people, not just the socialist left population."
"It's obvious by the comments which side of the tax line folks reside. It's shameful to see so many Americans looking for a handout."
"I'm praying for our country"
"I am just glad that these comments are on MSNBC.
John McCain will win and we will keep our rights!!!!"
"At a time like now in history with two wars and bad economy -McCain is the only choice."
"If Obama gets in, the U.S. could end up like Cuba. Fidel Castro made all the same promises and look how their country ended up. Scary..."
"We are in trouble if Obama Hussein wins"
"As a single mom making less than $40K a year, I will never get ahead if Obama wins. VOTE McCain-Palin!!!"
"You people are crazy. It is foolish to tax the wealthy too much, they foot the bill, they wrkd hard, took risks and deserve it."
"I thought McCain was where this country was at politically, but if not, my faith in this country will be shaken to the core."
"The cult-like Obama following is creepy and to be honest a bit scarey. Its the mob and weve seen what mobs are capable of."
"This is not the time to gamble on the unknown and inexperienced. McCain was not my preference but Barack is a socalist"
"McCain-The real American!"
"How is Obama supposed to lead us through the end of a WAR?! oh ya, did you forget about that?"
OK, first off, Obama is not a socialist, is not Muslim, and is every bit as American as McCain. He was born in Hawaii. He is a United States Senator. His entire life story is an open book. Nothing has been hidden, obscured, or lied about with regard to Obama's past. His middle name is common knowledge, but middle names are not carried down and this does not make him any relation to the former dictator in Iraq.
The entire concept that having as common of a middle name as Hussein (and it is EXCEPTIONALLY common around the world) could make someone a terrorist is just disgusting to me. For a country which loves freedom, we sure have a lot of Hitler-esque people running around wanting to start a new Holocaust for looking different or having different names than we're used to.
Some people are afraid of what they "know" about Obama. What they "know" is probably one of the lies or conspiracy theories above. Others are afraid of what they "don't know" about Obama, as if we know everything about McCain. Let's face it: the American public thinks that they know more about McCain because when they look at him, they see an old white guy, and that is what's comfortable to the average American. We know MORE about Obama than McCain based on all the information freely available about Obama's life, yet, because of his race and name, there is a select group of Americans that think he's scary and that there are too many "unknowns."
A special note to the single mom making $40,000 a year: Obama will lower your taxes. LOWER them. McCain will either leave them the same or raise them, depending on which day you ask. Throughout this entire election season, I haven't heard any other lower-middle class worker in this country use their class as a good reason to vote for McCain. That, to me, just doesn't add up... I think you may have received some bad information somewhere along the line.
Another special message to one individual: to the poster who stated that everyone voting for Obama is just looking for handouts, I think it should be known that I know people working two full time jobs. I know people working a full time job, a part time job, and going to college full time. I know people working two jobs, going to college, and raising a child by themselves. These people are not looking for handouts. They are hard working Americans who suffer when the ultra-rich decide to slash another benefit to drive up stock prices and give the CEO a bigger bonus. You subscribe to the textbook definition of capitalism, ignoring what has really become of the monster we call the free market. These people are just trying to get by, and if you had your way, they'd be homeless and starving because you want to trade in your two year old BMW for a new BMW. Try being a real American and looking out for your brothers and sisters in need.
Last direct message: how do you know who our "enemies" are rooting for? I'll leave it at that.
Also, there are the prayer-invokers who use the phrase "God help us." God help you with what? Obama is a Christian, folks. You can't insult his pastor AND claim he's not a Christian. You just simply can't have it both ways, so pick a side and stay with it. Facts are facts, your God counts both candidates as followers.
Finally, the war and our rights. Who started the war? Who revoked so many of our rights?
If you said "the president which McCain voted with 90% of the time and whose policies would continue under McCain," you would be correct.
Keep our rights and end the war by voting for a conservative?
That's like saying, "live a sober life by drinking more Jack Daniels."
Tonight should prove to be fun and exciting and, hopefully, not another heartbreaker like 2000 and 2004.
